Маштаков, Днепр 153), приток Сожа (в бывш. Смол. губ.) и др. реки в бывш. Моск., Новгор. губ. и т. д. Возм., "Злая (река)": ср. болг. лош м., ло́ша ж. "плохой, дурной", сербохорв. ло̏ш "несчастный, плохой", словен. lоšǝn "плохой".
Further etymology: Эти слова считаются родственными гот. lasiws ἄσθενής, ср.-нж.-нем. lаs "слабый, вялый"; см. И. Шмидт, Verw. 39; Бернекер 1, 734; Младенов 279; Уленбек, РВВ 30, 298; Фальк--Торп 625. Кроме того, допустимо предположение о родстве *lоšь с греч. λοξός "кривой", ирл. losc "хромой" (*loskos); см. Фик 1, 535; Стокс 244. Менее вероятно сближение с лохмо́тье, лахо́н (см. Преобр. I, 470; Ильинский, ИОРЯС 20, 3, 109). Этимология названия реки Лоша из балт. *Lašja "лососиная (река)" неприемлема в географическом отношении, вопреки Буге (RS 6, 36) и Фасмеру (Sitzber. Preuss. Аkаd., 1932, стр. 661).
