Further etymology: Ср. лит. vylùs "лживый", výlius "хитрость, обман", далее, лит. apvìlti "обмануть", др.-прусск. prawilts "преданный, выданный", англос. wîle, wîl "хитрость, обман" (см. Пеликан, LF 56, 244). Лиден (Vermischtes 74), Брандт (РФВ 18, 8) и Пеликан (там же) относят это слово к вить, вью. Буга (РФВ 75, 153) сравнивает его также с лит. vielóti "свертывать, развертывать", vielóju "мотаю", vielà "проволока". Неприемлемо, судя по зап.-слав. формам, предположение Преобр. (1, 84) об отыменном происхождении от ви́ла II (ви́лы) из *vidla. Малоубедительно сравнение с др.-инд. vḗllati "качается, шатается", vēllitas "волнистый, горбатый", пракр. velli, vellā "вьющееся растение" (см. Петерссон, AfslPh 36, 152; Шефтеловиц, WZKM 34, 228).
