North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *swĂHV
Meaning: cold
Proto-West Caucasian: *sʷǝ Notes: Correspondences are regular, and the etymology seems reliable (despite its scarce representation in EC languages). Cf. perhaps also Lak. sil (Khosr. sil) (Lak. > Arch. sel) 'hoar-frost' ( < *sʷ-il < *swVH-il?).

Lezghian etymology :

Proto-Lezghian: *s:(ʷ)V-rV
Meaning: cold (n.)
Udi: sori
Comment: The expedition materials on Rutul contain a word Rut. Luch. jis-dɨ, Ikhr. jiseji-d, Shin. jis-dɨ 'cold' which could be related to the Udi word (cf. an analogous relation between *jis:V- and *jis:V-rV- > *s:VrV- 'old, year' q.v.). But I strongly suspect that the meaning 'cold' here is a misspelling for 'old' and thus has nothing to do with the Udi form. This must be checked once more. Nevertheless, the Udi word seems to have reliable external parallels and thus must be considered an archaism.

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-West-Caucasian: *sʷǝ
Meaning: 1 to get cold, freeze 2 heap of snow
Abkhaz: a-š̌-rá 1
Abaza: šʷ-ra 1
Ubykh: sʷǝ-bIǝ́
Comments: PAT *sʷǝ (cf. also Bzyb. a-ś̌-rá). The Ub. word is a compound (for the second part see PWC *bIa), and an exact parallel of PAT *sʷǝ-bǝ "hoar-frost, caked snow" (Abkh. a-š̌ǝ́b, Abaz. šʷǝb). Therefore Dumézil's (1969) analysis of Ub. sʷǝ- as 'light, white' is certainly wrong. Despite Shagirov (1,194) PAT *sʷǝbǝ and Ub. sʷǝbIǝ́ for phonetic reasons can not be related to PAK *č:ápǝ 'hoar-frost'.
