Avar-Andian etymology :

Search within this database
Protoform: *š:uṭV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: lizard
Avar: š:uṭ (Ants.)
Comments: The Av. dialect form is quoted from Khaidakov 1973; he also lists variants č:uṭ, c:uṭ - which have an affricate due to contamination with the root č:ut q.v. Although both forms are hard to separate from within Avar, external evidence shows that they are historically distinct.

Av. dial. č:uṭ > Gunz. čuṭ 'lizard'.
