North Caucasian etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *q̇HămVŁwV
Meaning: one of several wives
Notes: An interesting common EC kinship term. In PL and PN it means 'one of two or several wives (relative to each other)', and this may well be the original meaning (changed to 'girl' in general in PTs). The meaning 'relative' in general observed in PA, however, may suggest another possibility: the stem may contain (in a shortened form) the numeral *q̇Hwǟ 'two' and may have originally meant generally "one of two relatives", with later development > "one of two wives". The meaning of the component *-mVŁwV is not clear.

Nakh etymology :

Proto-Nakh: *ʔamgi-r ( ~ -ḳ-)
Meaning: one of several wives
Chechen: emgar
Ingush: engar
Comments: The Nakh word has a quite solid EC etymology; that is why the Osset. ämɨǵɨr / ämigir must be certainly regarded as a loan from Nakh (despite Abayev 1958, 147-148).

Protoform: *q̇ʷanaƛ:a
Meaning: relative, kinsman
Chamalal: unaƛ: (Gig.)
Tindi: ʔʷanaƛ:a
Comments: The term can be analyzed as a genitive case form from *q̇ʷoni 'head' (q.v.) - this probably influenced the retention of the Inlaut lateral (otherwise PA *-k- would be expected), but is obviously a folk etymology.

Tabasaran: q̇Iamš
Agul: ʡamš (Burk.)
Rutul: q̇Iɨj
Kryz: q̇ew / q̇öw
