North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *kăwčǝ̄ (~ -ǝ-)
Meaning: bitch
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *kučV
Proto-Tsezian: *kača
Proto-Lak: kuča
Proto-Dargwa: *kuč
Proto-Lezghian: *kač
Proto-Khinalug: kač
Notes: The word is very similar in different subbranches, and some interlingual borrowings may have had happened (some of the certain borrowings were mentioned above). It is not excluded, that the Av. dialectal forms are borrowed from Lak., and that the Khin. form is borrowed from the Shakhdagh languages. However, the Tsezian and Lezghian forms can not be borrowed from any external source.

The root is close phonetically and semantically (and thus reveals a tendency to contaminate) with PEC *gwăǯē 'dog, bitch'. However, they are opposed in several languages and must be kept apart.

Chadakolob: kučá
Comments: Paradigm B (kučí-l, kuč-bí). Cf. also Av. Andal. guča 'bitch', which must be a contamination of this root with another one, present in lit. Av. gʷaží (see *gwăǯē).

Dargwa etymology :

Proto-Dargwa: *kuč
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: bitch
Chiragh: kuč
Comments: The word is attested only in Chir. and hence suspicious; but no immediate source of loan for this word can be discovered (in Lak. and in Avar dialects we have kuča, and in Agul - kač; phonetically they could not result in Chir. kuč).

Lezghian etymology :

Proto-Lezghian: *kač
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: bitch
Lezghian: kač
Tabasaran: kač
Agul: kač
Rutul: kuč
Kryz: käč
Budukh: kǝč
Comment: The Rut. form (with -u-) is interesting, suggesting that the original PL form may have been *kawč. Obl. base *ka(w)ča- (cf. Lezg. kča-, Tab. kača-, Ag. kača-). 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages.

Tsakh. gože must be kept apart from this root (see *gwăǯē).
