North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *wVlq̇V̄
Meaning: a k. of cereal; flour made of it
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *muq̇a
Proto-Tsezian: *muq̇V B
Proto-Lak: u
Proto-Dargwa: *nuq̇-un
Proto-Lezghian: *wVnq̇
Proto-Khinalug: moʁ
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Lak. u regularly < *muʔu (with loss of initial *m + narrow vowel). In many languages the root means a special sort of barley ("голозерный ячмень"), which must have been the original meaning or close to it. Note also the existance of a PEC derivate *wVlq̇V̄-nV 'flour made of young (barley) sprouts'; besides PD *nuq̇un and Tsakh. (Mishl.) uq̇un it is reflected in Lak. ini ( < *muʔV-ni) id., cf. especially Lak. u ini ( < *muʔu *muʔV-ni) 'flour from young barley sprouts'.
