North Caucasian etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *dājV / *dādājV
Meaning: father; mother
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *dadV Notes: A common NC nursery word, used for the most part as a term of endearment. Similar words are widely spread in many linguistic families, but the addressing form *dādā may well have existed also in PNC (correspondences between subgroups are basically regular). The root is usually reduplicated (although several languages reflect a non-reduplicated *dājV or a partially reduplicated *ʔādājV; cf. also HU: Hurr. at:aj, Urart. atǝ 'father', see Diakonoff-Starostin 1986, 25). This stem certainly was not a basic name for either 'father' (which was most probably *ʔŏbV̄jV) or 'mother' (*ʔānVjV), but could possibly be used as a term of endearment for both parents.

Lezghian etymology :

Proto-Lezghian: *dadVj
Meaning: 1 father 2 grandfather 3 mother
Lezghian: dide 3
Tabasaran: dada 3
Agul: dad 1
Rutul: did 1
Tsakhur: didi 2
Kryz: däj 3
Budukh: dide 3
Archi: dija 1
Comment: Cf. also Tsakh. Gelm. dedäj 'grandfather' ( < *t:at:a-j), Kryz. Al. dadaj 'mother'. In Arch. there occurred an irregular change *dida > dija (cf. *buba > buwa 'mother). There are several forms presupposing a partially reduplicated protoform *ʔadaj: Bud. ada 'father', Tab. edej 'grandfather', Kryz. däj 'mother'. Ruite irregular and contracted reflexes of the same "children's word" may be observed in Tab. daši 'father' (cf. Darg. *t:ut:e-š) and Tsakh. da-ḱ id. Within Lezghian languages forms meaning 'father' ('daddy') and 'mother' ('mummy') are usually in complementary distribution, so it is hard to separate them from each other.
