Proto-Tsezian: *čɔƛ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to rinse
Tsezi: čokƛ-
Khvarshi: čokƛ- (Radzhibov)
Comments: PTsKh *čokƛ-; it is interesting to note the coincidence between Tsez. č- and Lezgian forms in *č:-, but the combination -kƛ- is not quite clear (*čɔkƛ- < *čɔƛ-k-, with a secondary reanalysis of *-ƛ- as a verbal suffix?). Cf. perhaps also PGB *č̣aƛ- 'to pour out, scatter' (Bezht. Tlad., Khosh. č̣äƛ-, Gunz. č̣aƛ-) ?

Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡä[ƛ̣:]Vn- /č:-ä[ƛ̣:]Vn-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to wash 2 to make an ablution
Tabasaran: ži=ḳ- 1
Agul: žuḳül ʁušas 2
Archi: e=ƛ̣:in- 2
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Kand. ǯi=ḳ-, Düb. ǯa=ḳ- 'to wash', Ag. Bursh. ǯiḳan- 'to make an ablution'. In Tab. and Ag. the verb has an expressive preverb *č:-, which had probably caused a dissimilation *-ƛ̣:- > -ƛ̣- (Tab., Ag. -ḳ-). It is interesting to note some similarity in behaviour with the root *ʔeƛ̣:ɨ 'to sweep' (see under *=VŁ_wV); the two roots are of course different, but they could have influenced each other.
