North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *mHōK(V)ć̣V
Meaning: flint
Proto-Nakh: *mHāquc̣
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *gVmVč̣V /*č̣omHu
Proto-Lak: nuwč̣a
Proto-West Caucasian: *mǝč̣a ( ~ -ć̣-)
Notes: A specific trisyllabic structure (perhaps originally some compound), which resulted in some non-trivial changes (loss of the medial velar consonant in most languages, except PN). A probable (also irregular) transformation of the same root can be discovered in Tab. c̣i-hinč:, Düb. c̣i-mirč 'flint' (with PL *c̣aj 'fire' as the first component) - although the precise PL form can hardly be deduced from Tab.

Avar-Andian etymology :

Protoform: *gVmVč̣V /*č̣omHu
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 stone 2 flint
Avar: gamáč̣ 1
Chadakolob: gamáč̣ 1
Andian language: č̣omu 2
Karata: č̣amu 2
Godoberi: č̣amu 2
Comments: Av paradigm C (ganč̣í-l, gánč̣a-l). Cf. also And. (Khaidakov) č̣ow 'flint'. The Av. word for 'stone' is probably an old compound, whose first member is not clear (ga-) and the second is the same as mač̣ú (mač̣-dá-l, mač̣á-bi) 'flint' (Chad. moč̣ó). The Andian forms are metathesized (Kar. Anch. mač̣u 'flint' is obviously an Avar loanword). Old loans from Avar are Nakh forms: Chech. māžar, Ing. mažar 'flint gun', and Arch. mač̣a č̣ele 'flint' (č̣ele 'stone'). Av. gamač̣ > Gin., Gunz. gamač̣ 'big stone'.
