North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *ris_wĔ
Meaning: throat; neck
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ris:V
Proto-Tsezian: *rɨs:
Proto-Lezghian: *s:ʷir(a)
Proto-West Caucasian: *pǝ-śʷa (~-š́ʷ-)
Notes: Correspondences are quite regular (except for metathesis in PL which is a frequent phenomenon). PWC has a labial prefix (a former class exponent).

In HU this root, originally meaning "gullet; intestines", shifted the meaning and yielded *tis- (Hurr. tiža, tiž-na, Ur. tiš-nu) "heart" (after the basic word for "heart", *jĕrḳwi, changed its meaning to "middle, inside"). See Diakonoff-Starostin 1986, 53 (with erroneous attraction of Rut. lɨs).
