Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to chop, cut
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=uq- (~-χ-)
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔǝ̃χ:V
Proto-Lak: =u=qa-
Proto-Dargwa: *=aIq- / *=iq-
Proto-Lezghian: *t:-arχV-
Proto-Khinalug: l-iq-uvi
Proto-West Caucasian: *p(ǝ)χ(ʷ)V-
Notes: Pharyngealization in Darg. must be secondary (probably under influence of a similar verb -aIqʷ- / -iqIʷ- 'to destroy, derange' q.v.); other correspondences are regular. Several forms reflect the old Ablaut stem *-irqV.

As with other verbs of "beating", there exist some derivates meaning "wound" ( > "festering wound", "pus"), notably PC *ʔǝ̃χ:V ( < *ʔorqV-n) et al.

    See Абдоков 1983, 167.

Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *t:-arχV-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to chop 2 to beat
Rutul: darχa-s 1
Archi: daχi-s 2
Comment: The verbal stem (with the preverb *t:-) is attested only in Arch. and Rut. However, the Lezgian languages also reflect two nominal derivates from the same root:

    a) *b-arχV-n ("something cut > wound > pus, abscess"): Lezg. barχun 'pus', Tab. barχun 'pus, abscess', Ag. balχun (Fit. barχun, Burk. balχun; -l- in Rich. and Burk. is not quite clear - perhaps from *b-arχV-l with shift of liquid ?) 'pus';

    b) *ƛ̣:-irχV-t: with the same meaning: Rut. girχɨd 'abscess' (note the -i-vocalism reflecting the old Avlaut *a/i).

Semantic shifts like "to cut" > "wound" are rather usual in Caucasian languages, thus all the listed derivates belong to this root with high probability.

This component is also preseny in the infinitive (iŋ-dɔŋ5 < *ig-dɔŋ) and in Castren's recording: d-ig-ä-dū 'to flay' (praet. d-ig-ōr-dū) [supported by Werner's data, see Werner 1, 371].
