North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *mĕrs_A
Meaning: hair, long rag, thread
Notes: For PNC we can reconstruct also the obl. form *mĕrs_A-lV- (reflected in several Lezg. forms, Khin., AAnd. and Lak.). The Laki form lis:u reflects a regular dropping of initial *mV- (lis:u < *mVlis:u, the latter being a metathesized form of *mV(r)s:i-lu). The WC forms are very likely to belong here, too, although problems are raised by initial *p:- (we should expect *bǝsa); it may be a result of irregular dissimilative development within the PWC compound **bǝ̃la-bǝsa.

Proto-Nakh: *mos
Meaning: down, feather 1 tuft of hair
Chechen: mas
Ingush: mos
Comments: 4th class in Chech. and Ing. For PN a paradigm *mos, *masi- should be reconstructed (with vowel levelling in Chech.; cf. Chech. obl. mesa-).

Avar-Andian etymology :

Protoform: *mus:VrV
Meaning: rag
Akhvakh: mos:olo (Tseg.)
Tindi: mus:ura
Comments: It is also possible that the same root is contained within PA *ƛ̣i-ns:Vr 'eyebrow' (with a variant *ƛ̣:i-ns:Vr): Av. ƛ̣:ens:ér, Chad. ƛ̣:ensér; And. lens:i-b, Akhv. ƛ̣es:e, Cham. ƛ̣:es:al, Tind. ins:ar etc. (Tind. > Inkh. esser). This is rather probable taking into consideration the meaning of the root in other NC languages. The first component of *ƛ̣i-ns:Vr can be an early contraction of PEC *ʡwĭlʡi 'eye' (*ʡli- > *ƛ̣i-) which otherwise regularly yielded PA *harHi.

Proto-Lezghian: *märs:(a)
Meaning: 1 long rag, thread 2 yarn 3 remnants of wool
Tabasaran: mursul 1
Rutul: mes 3 (Khniukh)
Tsakhur: mɨsɨl 2
Kryz: mɨsra 2 (Al.)
Archi: mars:i 1
Comment: 3d class in Arch. and Kryz. The simple root is preserved in Rut., while other languages have expanded it with suffixes (*-j in Arch. and Kryz., *-l in Tab. and Tsakh.).

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Proto-West-Caucasian: *p:ǝ̃sa
Meaning: eyebrow
Abkhaz: á-ǯ́ǝ-mš́
Abaza: ǯ́ǝ-msa
Adyghe: nā-pca
Kabardian: nā-bʒa
Ubykh: bLa-msá
Comments: For PWC a compound *bǝ̃lV-p:ǝ̃sa (**'eye-hair') should be reconstructed. The first part is normally reflected in Ub. bLa- and PAK *na-, but in PAT replaced by an obscure component *ǯ́ǝ- (PAT *ǯ́ǝ-mǝsV). In Abkh. a further assimilation has occurred (*ǯ́ǝ-ms > ǯ́ǝ-mš́). The strong *p:- in PWC is suggested by the PAK form *-p:c:a < *-p:sa (PAK *na-p:c:á).
