Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. A very stable and regular root, which is probably explained by the importance of nettle in the East Caucasian household (it is frequently added to all kinds of food).

Abdokov (1983, 108) compares the EC root with PAK *pča-sanǝ / *pča-sǝranǝ 'nettle'; the word is rather obscure, and the phonetic correspondence between EC and WC is irregular, so this etymology should rather be rejected.

Proto-Nakh: *n(ɦ)iṭṭ ( ~ -ī-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: nettle
Chechen: nitt
Ingush: nitt
Batsbi: niṭṭ
Comments: Obl. base *n(ɦ)iṭṭe- (Chech. nitta-, Ing. nitto). 5th class in Chech., Ing., 6th class in Bacb. External evidence demands some laryngeal in this root; *nɦ- should be reflected as nʕ- in Bacb., but such a combination does not exist before front vowels. We may thus think that the PN form was actually *nɦiṭṭ, but the laryngeal was lost in all modern languages.

Comments: ССЕ 191. Werner's (1, 406) analysis as ʌm 'thorny' + as' 'feather' is very dubious - primarily because nothing like ʌm thorny is attested (Werner adduces a form ʌ́ntaveroś 'thorny', in no way pointing to *ʌm: it obviously contains the same root as Ket. ʌ:ndɔ 'to prick', see under *ʔVq-).
