North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hŏq̇_Ē
Meaning: to do, make; to be, become
Notes: Trubetzkoy 1930,87 compares WC *q́I:a 'to be' with another PEC stem (*ʔikV q.v.), which is impossible for phonetic reasons. The comparison with *=Hŏq̇_Ē seems quite plausible semantically and phonetically. A similar root exists in Kartvelian (Georg. q̇a-w- 'to be, to have'); its comparison with WC see in Charaya 1912, 37, Lomtatidze 1956, 225, 228; the nature of its connection with the NC root is yet to be cleared up.

Proto-Tsezian: *=ɔq- B
Meaning: 1 to become; to be born 2 to grow
Tsezi: =oqI- 1

Khvarshi: eqq- (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: =eqIʷ- 1, l-eqʷ- 2
Bezhta: =aq- (Tlad.) 1
Gunzib: =ɔq- 1
Comments: PGB *=ɔq- (cf. also Bezht. Khosh. =aq-); PTsKh *-öq-. The Inkh. parallel is somewhat problematic because of labialised -qʷ-.

Dargwa etymology :

Proto-Dargwa: *=a(r)q̇- / *=i(r)q̇-
Meaning: to do, to make
Chiragh: =arq̇- / =irq̇-
Comments: Cf. also Ur. =aIq̇- / =iq̇- id. Medial -r- in Chir. is probably secondary (perhaps reflecting the original paradigm *=aq̇- / *=irq̇- with infixation).

Proto-West-Caucasian: *q́:Ia
Meaning: 1 to be 2 to have
Abkhaz: á-q̇a-la-ra 1
Abaza: a-ʡa-z-la-ra 1
Adyghe: -ʡa- 1,2
Kabardian: -ʡa- 1,2
Ubykh: q̇a-ʁ- 2
Comments: PAT *ʡa (used in conjunction with the verbal stem-suffix *-la-); PAK *ʡa in *š́ǝ-ʡa- 'to be' (Ad. š́ǝʡa-, Kab. śǝʡa- with a locative preverb *š́ǝ-), *jǝ-ʡa- 'to have' (Ad., Kab. jǝʡa- with a pronominal preverb *jǝ-); Ub. a-s-q̇á-ʁ "je l'ai" (a compound stem q̇a-ʁǝ-; etymology of the second part see under *ʁV). The correspondence PAT, PAK *ʡ : Ub. q̇ points only to PWC *q́:I. See Shagirov 1,190; 2, 150 (with literature and with right dismissal of many false etymologies).
