Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔačʷɨ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to take 2 to take away 3 to bring
Lezghian: q:-aču- 1
Tsakhur: sa=če- 2
Udi: eč-sun 3
Comment: Cf. Lezg. pret. q:aču-na. The Lezg. form (in -u-) points to labialisation of *čʷ, which was early lost in the PL *-ɨ-conjugation. We should also compare (with *a/*i Ablaut) the Shakhdagh verb of motion: Kryz. pres. čä-ri, imper. =ič- 'to go', Bud. imper. w-ič id.; cf. also the Tab. imperative ʁa=č (Düb. q:a=č) 'come!' (formally quite close to Lezg. q:aču-), perhaps also Ag. ača- in ača-baI-s, ača-dis (compound verbs) 'to enter'.

Notes: The PEC-PWC comparison belongs to Trubetzkoy (1930, 278; see also comments on p. 460; see further Абдоков 1983, 169), and seems quite satisfactory.

Adyghe: š́a-n
Kabardian: ša-n
Comments: PAK *č́a- (also *č́ǝ- with some preverbs). See Shagirov 2, 137-138. The PWC reconstruction is tentative (because of the absence of AA and Ub. cognates); PAK *č́ can go back to PWC *čʷ, *č́ or *ƛ́.
