Lezghian etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔeʎ(:)ʷVr-
Meaning: 1 to burn 2 to get heated 3 warm 4 to boil
Lezghian: ife- 2
Tabasaran: k-a=x- (Düb.)
Agul: k-ejxi- (Bursh.)
Rutul: u=xʷa- 1
Tsakhur: k-o=xar- 4
Budukh: fe-ji 3
Comment: Cf. also Ag. Bursh. k-ejxi- 'to burn'. The Tsakh. form poses some problems. In the Tsakh. dialect Talibov has noted only q-o-xan- 'boil' which obviously must belong to another root (see *ʔVrʎ:an). However, in the Mikik dialect both k-o=xar- 'boil' and ǵ-o=x:an- 'burn (intr.)' had been written down - with seemingly reversed semantics. This is either a result of interdialectal mixture or faulty notice. There is a great deal of confusion in the Tsakh. recordings as to the tenseness of -x- (-x:-) in this root, thus the PL reconstruction (*-ʎʷ- or *-ʎ:ʷ-) is not clear in this point.

Proto-North Caucasian: *=V̄wʎ_wĔr
Meaning: to warm up, to be warm
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=Vx- Proto-West Caucasian: *ʎ́ʷV Notes: A reliable common NC root (although because of reductions of the initial syllable and absence of reflexes in most Andian and Tsezian languages it is hard to reconstruct the first vowel).

Proto-Tsezian: *ʎ:e-h-
Meaning: 1 to burn (intr.) 2 to catch fire
Bezhta: ʎij- (Tlad.)
Gunzib: ʎeh-
Comments: PGB *ʎ[e]-h-; judging by the external parallels, -h- must be a historical suffix. With another suffix cf. perhaps Bezht. Khosh. ʎi-š- "to burn (a lamp)".

Lak root: š:a-ra-
Meaning: to boil, seethe
Lak form: š:a-ra-n
Comments: A durative stem (cf. Khosr. š:ara-n id.). Several forms are reduplicated: cf. imper. š:araš:u, as well as the noun š:araš:i 'spring, source', š:araš:i dan 'to boil (trans.)'. The latter form was probably borrowed (with some distortions) into Archi: haIrš-bos (dur. haIrš:ar) 'to boil'.

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Proto-West-Caucasian: *ʎ́ʷV
Meaning: 1 to boil 2 warm
Abkhaz: a-š-rá 1
Abaza: š-ra 1
Adyghe: fā-ba 2
Kabardian: xʷā-ba 2
Ubykh: šʷa-dá- 1
Comments: PAT *šǝ; PAK *xʷa-bá. Shagirov (2,106) takes from Ubykh another root: š́a- 'to be hot'. However, Ub. š́ can not correspond to PAK *xʷ, while Ub. šʷa-dá- is a perfect match for both AA and AK forms. It is probable that Ub. š́a- 'be hot' goes back to another PWC root, *š́V (*š:́V) which is not reflected in PAK, but in PAT merged with *šǝ < *ʎ́ʷA. This seems probable because the Abkh. root means both 'boil' and 'become hot'.
