Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *p:alḳʷ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 cheek,cheek-bone 2 spine 3 bone 4 rib
Lezghian: p:arḳʷ 1 (Khl.)
Rutul: barḳʷ 2 (Al.)
Tsakhur: barḳʷ 3
Kryz: beḳ 4
Comment: Obl. stem *p:alḳʷa- (cf. Lezg. Khl. p:arḳʷa-, Tsakh. Gelm. barḳʷa-). Medial *-l- is reconstructed because of the liquid's preservation before a velar (original *-r- would be lost). 3d class in Tsakh., 4th class in Kryz. The root must have denoted some specific bone; to judge from external evidence, originally it must have been some bone of leg.

North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *bŏlVḳwŏ / *ḳwŏlVbŏ
Meaning: leg bone
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *bV(l)ḳV
Proto-Dargwa: *buruḳ
Proto-Lezghian: *p:alḳʷ
Proto-West Caucasian: *ḳaṗa
Notes: There occurred a metathesis either in PEC or in PWC (rather usual for roots of this type); otherwise the correspondences are all right (in PWC there's a usual delabialisation before the following labial) and the comparison seems quite reliable.
