Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔaχär-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to sleep 2 sleep, dream (n.)
Lezghian: aχʷ-ar 2
Tabasaran: aχ- 1
Agul: aχa- 1 (Bursh.)
Rutul: s-a=χa- 1
Kryz: äχr- 1
Budukh: a=χar- 1
Archi: aχu kes 1
Udi: (nep:) aχesun 1
Comment: Labialisation in Lezg. is clearly secondary (all other languages point to *χ). The original meaning was probably 'to lie; to throw, fall', cf. Ud. b-arχi 'horizontal' ( < *'lying') (perhaps also, with prefixation and Ablaut, Rut. qa-ruχa-s 'to throw'). A local derivate from this root is Tab. aχin (Düb. aχin) 'bed', Ag. Bursh., Fit. aχun id., Rich., Burk. aχun 'mattress'.

    See Хайдаков 1973, 141.

Notes: The comparison seems plausible phonetically and semantically. See Абдоков 1983, 167.

Avar-Andian etymology :

Search within this database
Protoform: *=aχ- / *=aχ:-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to fall 2 to throw (down)
Avar: reχ:- 2
Chadakolob: =eχ- 1,2
Andian language: =aχ- 1
Chamalal: =aχ- 1
Tindi: =aχ- 1
Comments: The Av. and Andian forms are obviously connected, although there is an irregular correspondence Av. -χ:- : PA *-χ-. This must be explained by a variation in the position of the resonant: PA *=aχ- < *=arχV-, Av. reχ:- < *rVχ:V- (literary Avar has here a stable r-; changing prefixes in Av. Chad. must be secondary). In both cases the resonant must have been metathesized from the Auslaut position (cf. PL *ʔaχär-). The fricative *χ develops in different ways in Av.-Andian and Tsezian languages, depending on its position (after a resonant or after a vowel).

Proto-West-Caucasian: *pχa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to fall 2 to throw, scatter

Adyghe: pχǝ-n 2
Kabardian: pχǝ-n 2
Ubykh: pχa- 2
Comments: PAT *ħa (used with locative preverbs); PAK *pχǝ-. The AT form is usually not compared with Ub. and AK (see Mészáros 1934, 223; Shagirov 2, 24), but the comparison seems quite plausible both phonetically and semantically.
