Further etymology: Считают родственным лит. šùlas "столб, косяк", др.-прусск. sulis "стойка", греч. ξύλον "дерево, брус, палка, скамья, стол", возм., также д.-в.-н. sûl "столб", гот. sauls "колонна, столб"; см. Перссон 382 и сл.; Гофман, Gr. Wb. 222; Цупица, ВВ 25, 93; Торп 446; Траутман, Арr. Sprd. 441. Другие отделяют ю.-слав. слова от польск. и вост.-слав. и производят вост.-слав. слова через польск. из д.-в.-н. sûl "колонна, столб" (напр., Маценауэр (339), аналогично Брюкнер (FW 143)). Помимо этого, вост.-слав. и польск. слова также рассматриваются как заимств. из лит. šùlas "столб, косяк" (напр., Скарджюс 18; Карский, РФВ 49, 21), причем первый ввиду древности балт. слов ссылается на лит. šùlė "бочка", šulinỹs, šulinė̃ "колодец с деревянным срубом". И в этом случае пришлось бы отделить ю.-слав. слова (против этого см. Брюкнер 557; KZ 44, 331). Абсолютно недостоверно сравнение лит. šùlas с нов.-в.-н. диал. Schôlholz, ср.-н.-н. schalbort, нов.-в.-н. Schalholz "тес" (см. Бецценбергер, KZ 44, 331) или слав. šulо -- с греч. σκύλλω "раздираю, деру" (Горяев, Доп. I, 58).
