    Für den Ansatz arqu- (und nicht arqu̯-) würde sprechen russ. rakíta, čech. rokyta, serb. rokita usw. `Haarweide', wo *arqūta (Miklosich EWb. 226, Torbjörnsson BB. 20, 140) zugrunde liegt, und gr. ἄρκευθος `Wacholder', welches Wort mit Lidén IF. 18, 507 mit aller Wahrscheinlichkeit hierzu zu ziehen ist; dazu ἀρκευθίς `Wacholderbeere'. Allerdings nimmt Lidén Verwandtschaft mit gr. ἄρκυς `Netz' (s. Bezzenberger BB. 21, 285) an, wozu man unter ar-1, S. 61 vergleiche.

    Eine andere Verbindung für gr. ἄρκευθος und russ. rakíta usw. sucht Endzelin KZ. 44, 59 ff., der richtiger lett. ẽrcis, ẽcis (*ẽrcis) `Wacholder' vergleicht; ferner ẽrcêties `sichquälen, grämen, streiten', ẽrceša `eine sehr zänkische Person'; lett. ẽrkš(k')is `Dornstrauch' wäre nach Endzelin Mischung von *erkīs und einer dem lit. erškė̃tis `Dornpflanze' wurzelhaftentsprechenden Form; gr. ἀρ- müßte dann Schwundstufe von *er- enthalten. S. unter erk-.
