Further etymology: Исконнородственно лит. bė́gu, bė́gti "бежать", греч. φέβομαι "я бегу", φόβος "бегство, страх". Предполагается существование древнего атематического наст. времени (см. Мейе, MSL 14, 336; Траутман, BSW 29). Праслав. *bēgēti имеет соответствие в лтш. прош. bêdzu от bêgu, bêgt "бежать"; см. Остен-Сакен, IF 33, 230; М. -- Э. I, 289. Долгота первого слога является балто-слав. чертой. Ср. также лит. bogìnti "тащить (с трудом)", лтш. buodzinât "обращать в бегство", о котором см. Френкель, BSpr. 77 и сл. Неубедительна попытка Соболевского (Лекции 66) реконструировать вариант *beg- с кратким гласным на основе ю.-в.-р. бёг (см. Марков, РФВ 76, 276) и укр. диал. бюог "бежал". Наличие -ě- в *běgǫ объясняли и.-е. перфектом Фортунатов (KZ 36, 50), Бецценбергер (ВВ 27, 167). По мнению Ягича (AfslPh 20, 428), первоначальной является фopмa*běgěti "бежать" (в смысле состояния), в то время как poběgǫ, uběgǫ имело знач. определенного действия -- "бежать, убежать".
