Принимая во внимание существование заговоров, начинающихся словом ра́дуга́ (Даль) и диал. весёлка "радуга", курск.; укр. весе́лиця, весе́лка -- то же; ср. также лит. linksmỹnė "радуга": liñksmas "веселый", следует считать этимологию радуга из *radǫga, производного от radъ (см. рад), наиболее вероятной; ср. Мi. ЕW 272; Зеленин, Табу 2, 116; Бодуэн де Куртене, РФВ 1, 111. Форма ра́йдуга легко могла образоваться в результате влияния слова рай по народн. этимологии, поэтому едва ли она является самой древней, вопреки Соболевскому (РФВ 70, 96), Преобр. (II, 171), Маценауэру (LF 16, 163), Калиме ("Slavia", 17, 33 и сл.). Названные ученые исходят из первонач. знач. "блестящая, пестрая дуга", причем Калима (там же) ссылается на раёк "радужная оболочка глаза". В случае ра́вдуга он предполагает невероятное влияние морд. Rаw "Волга". Неверно и толкование из *ār-dǫgа "небесная дуга" (ср. лит. óras "воздух", лтш. ārs -- то же (напр. К. О. Фальк, Еt. St. 1 и след.)), так как этот корень отсутствует в слав., кроме того, ожидался бы соединительный гласный. В таком случае было бы др.-русск. *яродѫга. Относительно знач. балт. слов ср. также Эндзелин, Don. nat. Schrijnen 402. Форма ра́вдуга неясна.
