Finn. kokko und est. kokas gehören wahrscheinlich mit finn. kotka und est. kotkas zusammen, die lautliche Unregelmäßigkeit (finn. tk~kk, est. tk~k) ist bei Vogelnamen keine Seltenheit (vgl. SKES). Fokos (FUF 16: 85ɨ7) hält wog. (WV 4) TJ šärkēś, KU šȫrkǝś, P šarkǝś 'Adler' für ein Kompositum und ordnet die zweite Komponente (-kēś usw.) in den oben genannten etymologischen Zusammenhang ein. Das ist jedoch nicht akzeptabel, da das wog. Wort eine iranische Entlehnung ist (vgl. Munkacsi: KSz. 5 : 326; Kannisto: MSFOu. 52:97; Korenchy, ILOS 69; Joki: MSFOu. 151 :320).
