Meaning: 'horn'
Ometo: Shakko fära 'horn' Bla. Eleph., 196; comp. with She fäl, Benčo päl, fäl id. (all apud Mukarovsky). Though in Dolg.1973, 337, *-l- yields -r- in Ometo allowing for Shakko fära <*fäla, this correspondence requires further investigation, and for the moment, I prefer to separate the Shekko form from the She and Bencho terms in -l.

Proto-Afro-Asiatic: *piʔVr-
Meaning: elephant/rhinoceros (< horn?)
Semitic: *pīr- (<*piʔr-?) 'elephant'
Western Chadic: *(ʔa-)pi/ar- 'horn' (?)
Central Chadic: *pir- 'elephant'
Mogogodo (Yaaku): *puriʔ- 'rhinoceros'
Omotic: (?) *far- 'horn'
Notes: Cf. Sem. *pīl-, Gz. falfal- id. Cf. Ill.-Sv. 1966, 26 (Sem. and Margi) and, in this connecrion, *pi/al- 'elephant; aardvark'. Cf. Bla. Eleph., 196, where various Afras. forms in -r and -l, some meaning 'elephant/rhinoceros', other 'horn' are united, and "the semantic motivation "horn" > "elephant (/rhinoceros)" confirmed by typological evidences" (in particular, Sum. am-si 'elephant', composed from am 'wisent' and si 'horn' , apud Salonen 1976, 175) is tentatively proposed.
