Number: 2647
Proto-Semitic: *ba/ird_-awn- ~ *barz/d_-
Afroasiatic etymology: Afroasiatic etymology
Meaning: 'mule, horse'
Syrian Aramaic: bardūnā 'mulus; equus sarcinarius' [Brock. 95], [PS 604]
Tigre: bazra, bazratat 'young horse' [LH 293]
Gurage: bazra 'mare' [LGur. 169]
Notes: There is also Eth *bazr- 'mare', obviously eventually related (cf. Gz. bāzrā 'mare' [LGz. 118], Tgr. bazra, bazratat 'young horse' [LH 293], Tna. bazra, pl. bazratat 'cavalla' [Bass. 335], Gog. bazra 'mare' [LGur. 169]) with many parallels in Cushitic; it is difficult to say whether these forms were borrowed from Eth. in Cushitic or vice versa. However, a hypothesis of a Cushitic term related to Sem. *bariǯ- 'mule' with metathesis and a shift of meaning (borrowed in Proto-Eth.) looks more plausible than an assumption of Eth *bazr-at, with metathesis and a meaning shift inherited from PSem.

Afroasiatic etymology :

Proto-Afro-Asiatic: *ba/ird_-awn- ~ *baʒ/ǯr- (?)
Meaning: mule; mare
Semitic: *ba/ird_-awn- ~ *baz/d_r- 'mule, horse'
Central Cushitic (Agaw): *bad/zr- 'mare' <Eth?
Saho-Afar: *badir- 'mare' < Eth?
Notes: Highly problematic. Two hypotheses: (1) a Cushitic term (borrowed into Proto-Eth.) related to Sem. *barid_- 'mule' with metathesis and (2) Sem. *ba/ird_-awn- ~ *bad_r- 'mule, horse' > Eth *bazr-at (borrowed into Cush).
