North Caucasian etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *kwɨ̄jc_V
Meaning: form, appearance
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. The word seems to be genuine at least in Ing., PL (where regular phonetic development took place) and Laki (the Lak. word has a tense -c:- which can not be explained if we assume a loan from Av., Darg. or Lezg. kuc). The Laki form (with regular weakening *kuc: > kuc) is the most probable source for Avar kuc 'measure, form; face' (whence Akhv. (cited from Khaidakov 1973) kuči 'face'), and for Darg. kuc 'appearance, form, build' (identical in all dialects: Ak., Ur., Muir., Sirg., Kub., Tsud. kuc).

Proto-Nakh: *kust ( ~ -ū-,-ṭ)

Comments: Both Ing. and Chech. have also the word kuc with similar meanings - obviously a loan from Av. kuc id.

Comment: The Archi word demonstrates a regular development *c > s, and the PL reconstruction seems justified (although, of course, interlingual loans are possible).

Proto-Yenisseian: *k[uʔu]s ( ~ g-)
Meaning: idol, ghost
Ket: uĺguś5 "water spirit", qajguś5, ĺɨt-ɨś "wood spirit"; South. śɛnbereŋ5 ku:ś "a shaman's pendant looking like an iron doll"
Yug: ku:s, pl. kūsin1; ejskūs1 "icon"; urgus5 "water spirit"; xajgus5 "wood spirit"
Kottish: ul-iś, pl. uliśin "Wasserkobold"; *uliśe, uliśi
Pumpokol: lɨcɨ (Срсл.) "devil" ( = Ket. ĺɨtɨś < *ŕɨʔǯ-k[uʔu]s)
Comments: ССЕ 240. Werner 1, 458 <*kugǝs / *koʔǝs>: regards the word as "offensichtlich eine sehr alte Entlehnung in den Jenissej-Sprachen", but the source is not clear. Kott. koaš 'beautiful' has probably nothing to do with the above words, being an obvious late borrowing from Oyr. quas etc. (itself regarded as an Iranian loanword, see VEWT 295).

Comments: Bsq-NC phonetic similarity is apparent, but semantic correlations are more difficult. S.A. Starostin reconstructed PSC *kwɨ̄́jcV̆ ‘spirit, appearance, demon’. Note especially the semantic similarity of Bsq (L) hots ‘strong inclination’ and Archi kus ‘habit’.
