North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *šērč_V
Meaning: a k. of grass
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Despite some phonetic problems, the etymology seems generally plausible. The semantic correlation "sedge" : "onion, garlic" is easily explained by external similarity of the leaves of these two plants.

Nakh etymology :

Proto-Nakh: *šārč
Meaning: sedge
Chechen: šač
Ingush: šarš
Comments: The reconstruction is highly tentative, because the Chech. and Ing. forms correspond badly to each other. It is not clear why Chech. lost -r-, and why in Ing. -č > -š. 4th class in both languages.

Dargwa etymology :

Proto-Dargwa: *š:erš:i
Meaning: onion, garlic
Akusha: širši (Ur.)
Comments: The word has an unexpected voiced ž in several dialects: Ak. žerši, Kait. šerži, Kub. š:ejže. It is possible that these forms are actually borrowed from Tabasaran: cf. forms like Düb. šerže 'garlic' (which is a regular reflex of *šerš:).
