Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *s:iʎ:ʷV-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to sift 2 sieve
Lezghian: saf 2
Tabasaran: sif 2
Agul: zu-r-fi- 1
Rutul: sixʷ 2
Tsakhur: wex:ʷa 2
Comment: The verb is preserved only in Agul /Burshag dialect/; the noun 'sieve' in Agul is a later derivate (Rich. sirfel, Bursh., Burk. zerfel, Fit. zarfil). All other languages (except Tsakhur) have preserved only the PL derivate *s:iʎ:ʷ 'sieve' (besides the forms listed cf. also Lezg. Khl. sef, Akht. sef, Tab. Düb. sif:i, Khür. s:if:, Rut. Khniukh suf, Ams. süx). Most languages reflect the form with an old preverb *s:-; the only exception is Tsakh. w-ex:ʷa ( < *w-äʎ:ʷaj with another prefix and Ablaut), pointing to an original verbal root *ʔiʎ:ʷV ( / *ʔäʎ:ʷV) 'to sift'.

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to sift
Abkhaz: a-χʷ-rá
Abaza: χʷ-ra
Kabardian: wǝ-xʷa-nṣ́ǝ-n
Ubykh: -xa-
Comments: PAT *xʷǝ; Ub. 1st p. a-sǝ́-xa-n. The Kab. form is a compound verb (wǝ-xʷa-n "sifting" + ṣ́ǝ-n "to do"). In PAK cf. also *xʷǝ-zǝ- 'to press (as orange)', reflected in Kab. xʷǝzǝ-n, Ad. fǝzǝ-n.

Salazarese: bae
Lapurdian: bahe

Comments: It is hypothesized here that the Bsq word is composed of a fossilized class prefix *b= + the PSC root *=íxwV 'to sift': Cf. PNC *=if_V 'to sift' > Tsakh. wex:ʷa 'sieve'. Bouda (1948) compared Bsq bahe + Tsakhur weχ:a (sic.). For phonology cf. Bsq *bahi = PNC *(w)=HirfV-.
