North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *šHătV
Meaning: spittle, saliva
Proto-Nakh: *šato
Proto-Dargwa: *š:aIt
Notes: A Nakh-Darg. isogloss. Obviously related to Osset. sät / sätä 'spittle, saliva' (cf. also Balk. šǝtǝ id.). If its Iranian etymology is correct (*spaɵa, see Abayev 1979, 92) - which, however, is somewhat dubious for phonetic and morphological reasons - we will have too acknowledge the Iranian origin of the gloss.

Nakh etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Nakh: *šato (/-ṭ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 spittle 2 saliva
Chechen: šet
Ingush: šod
Batsbi: šatŏ
Comments: Chech. šet probably is a secondary building after the obl. base *šati- (Chech. šeta-). 4th class in all languages.

In PN there are no clusters of *š- + laryngeals; it is not excluded that in this root such a cluster had existed (cf. the pharyngealization in the Darg. parallel), and influenced the reflex of medial *-t- in Ing. (where the form šod points to *šaṭo < *šHato?).

Akusha: šut-ri
Comments: Cf. also Gapsh. šaIt-ri, Kait. š:aIt-ri, Kharb. š:at-re (all forms are pluralia tantum). Cf. also, with secondary glottalisation, Kub. š:uIṭ-u, Tsud. š:uIṭ-e id.

Basque etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Basque: *i=śtu
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: spittle, saliva
Gipuzkoan: istu
High Navarrese: iztu, ixtu
Comments: An expressive form that phonetically matches PEC *šHătV, with the usual syncope < *i=śutu, or the like. This and other similar forms (txistu, listu, lixtu, etc.) are the results of much cross-contamination and blending with Bsq *tu ‘to spit’, *lić ‘saliva’, etc.
