Sino-Caucasian etymology :

Proto-Sino-Caucasian: *sḗmsā
Meaning: insect, worm, leech
Comments and references : Cf. other similar words: PNC/PEC ǯimǯV (~ *ʒ́imʒ́V) ‘leech; a biting insect’, *š_wĕʒV 'a k. of biting insect' (cf. Bsq *sac ~ *sic 'moth'), *miʒ_Ă / *ʒ_imiʒĂ 'a k. of stinging insect', *cīmc_V 'a k. of insect', *c̣ĕlc̣ŭ id. It is possible that some of these were originally expressive variants of the same original root. Etymological comparison suggested by John Bengtson.

North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *sēms_ā (~ -ǝ̄)
Meaning: a k. of insect
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Although this is an expressive reduplicated root, and not widely spread, the reconstruction seems reliable (we should at any rate distinguish it from several other phonetically close roots like *ʒ_imiʒĕ, *cīmc_V etc.).

Protoform: *sis:ʷVn / *sins:ʷV
Meaning: 1 bug, bed-bug 2 beetle
Avar: s:ons:ó 1
Chamalal: susũ 2
Comments: Cf. also Av. (Uslar) s:ʷans:ʷá (acc. paradigm B: plur. s:uns:-bí) 'bug', Cham. Gig. susũ, Gad. susun 'beetle'. We should probably assume that the two *s consonants in Proto-Av.-And. differed in tenseness; Av. and Cham. must have experienced different types of assimilation.

Proto-Lezghian: *semsV ( ~ *s:)
Meaning: ant
Tsakhur: semsälä (Gelm.)
Comment: The root is preserved only in Tsakh.; it obviously was modified semantically under the influence of PL *c:imc: 'ant'. However, external data show that it is an independent root.

Proto-Basque: *sisa-li / *sisa-ni
Meaning: 1 worm 2 leech
Bizkaian: uzan 2
Gipuzkoan: zizari 1, txitxare 1, izaiñ, izai 2
High Navarrese: zizari, zizare 1, izaiñ, izai 2, (Elkano) zirain 2
Low Navarrese: zizari 1, xixain 2, itxain 2
Salazarese: xixare 1
Lapurdian: zizari, zizare 1, xixain 2
Baztanese: zizari 1, xixari 1
Aezkoan: zirain 2
Zuberoan: zizari 1, xixari 1, zizein, zizeñ 2, xixain, xixein 2
Comments: In some but not all dialects the default form (zizari, zizare) denotes 'earthworm' and palatal forms (xixari, txitxare, etc.) denote intestinal worms. It is also possible that all or some of the Bsq words are related instead to PEC *ǯimǯV (~ *ʒ́imʒ́V) ‘leech; a biting insect’, or that the latter is an expressive variant of PEC *sēmsā.
