Sino-Caucasian etymology :

Proto-Sino-Caucasian: *ɦwVla ( ~ *ɦwVɫa)
Meaning: hearth
North Caucasian: *ɦwVlaq_ē ( ~ -ɫ-)
Basque: *oɫha
Comments and references : The PEC form looks like an old compound, perhaps *ɦwVla-qē < *ɦwVla-qǝ̆lV̆ (*qǝ̆lV̆ ‘house, hut’), with the second lateral dropped by dissimilation. In any case, only the PEC segment *ɦwVla- is compared with Bsq *oɫha. Etymological comparison suggested by John Bengtson.

Proto-North Caucasian: *ɦwVlaq_ē ( ~ -ɫ-)
Meaning: hearth
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ʔa(n)q:V
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔãχ:V (~-ɔ̃-,-ʁ-)
Proto-Lak: wilaχ
Proto-Lezghian: *laχ:a
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. The original trisyllabic structure is well preserved in Lak.; other languages treat it like a disyllabic structure *ɦwlăq_ē.

Note that PD *hanq:i 'hearth', however similar, is not related and goes back to PEC *ɦnărG_wī 'house' (q.v.): perhaps we should rather speak of a merger of these two roots in Darg., because of their phonetic and semantic similarity.

Proto-Basque: *oɫha
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 forge, foundry 2 (shepherd's) hut 3 cabin, cottage 4 country house
Bizkaian: ola 1
Gipuzkoan: ola 1
High Navarrese: ola 1
Low Navarrese: olha 1
Lapurdian: olha 3, 4
Zuberoan: ólha 2, 3
Roncalese: (Vidángoz) õla 3
Comments: The semantic change was probably 'hearth, forge' (cf. PEC *ɦwVlaq_ē 'hearth') > 'hut with a hearth, heated hut' > 'cabin, cottage', etc. (Cf. English stove ~ Norw. stova ‘cottage, hut; (living-) room’, Swed. stuga ‘cottage, cabin’, Ger. Stube ‘room’ (orig. ‘heated room’), etc.) Ol(h)a is an element in numerous Bsq place names, and in modern Bsq the meaning ‘forge’ has been extended to ‘factory’.
