Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *jŭ (/-n)
Meaning: a k. of small animal (hare, rabbit, rat)
Tibetan: jos hare (but only as an astronomical term).
Burmese: jun hare.
Kachin: ju3 a rat, mouse.
Lushai: sa-zu a rat, KC *b-ju.
Comments: Chepang rok-ju rat; Mikir phi-dźu; Namsangia dźu-pu; Kanauri pyu rat; Bahing yö; Rgyar. pu-yu rat. Sh. 42, 134, 430; Ben. 32. The OCh. form (especially if it has *Ł-, suggested by xie-sheng) should perhaps be rather compared with Jnp. sǝlo3 flying squirrel, yielding a reconstruction *ƛǝ̆w.

North Caucasian etymology :

Proto-North Caucasian: *jVcwĔ
Meaning: mouse
Notes: A Darg.-WC isogloss, but probably very archaic (see Starostin 1982, 218). PD *waca can only go back to a PEC form like *jVcwV with metathesis of labialisation (original *w- would have yielded PD *b-). From other EC languages one could possibly list also PGB *ʔɨ̃z-baṭu (Bezht. izmaṭo, Gunz. ǝ̃zbaṭu 'weasel, squirrel'). PGB *ʔɨ̃z- would correspond well to PD *waca < *jacʷa, but would suggest a PEC (and PNC) form with some medial resonant (most probably *jVncwĔ).

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Proto-West-Caucasian: *jaš́(ʷ)V / *š́ʷajV
Meaning: squirrel
Abkhaz: á-ješ
Adyghe: śāja (Shaps.)
Comments: Although the correspondences are not quite regular (Abkh. reflects a delabialized *š́, while Ad. ś < *š́ʷ), the Abkh. and Ad. forms are hard to separate. Within the Adygh dialects there is also some variation: Kuipers (1975, 28) compares also Bzhed. śʷāja 'rat' (we would also add Tem. śʷāja id.) reflecting an old variant *sʷajV.
