Proto-North Caucasian: *Ł_ōlV
Meaning: guest, neighbour
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Correspondences are regular. Cf. also the HU parallels: Hurr. lula-χ:ǝ 'foreigner' ( = PN *lōlu-χaw), Ur. lul-ue 'foreigner, enemy' (see Diakonoff-Starostin 1986, 48). Abdokov (1983, 88) compares the Andian forms (with the secondary meaning 'parent-in-law') with Ad. ṣʷǝ- in ṣʷǝ-gʷāš́ 'mother-in-law', ṣʷǝ-pš́ 'father-in-law'. These forms, however, being quite isolated in WC, should be rather analyzed as metaphoric compounds meaning originally 'fair princess'/ 'fair prince'; at any rate, Ad. ṣʷ- (going back to PWC *c̣ʷ) can not correspond to PEC *Ł_.

Proto-Nakh: *lōlu
Meaning: neighbour
Chechen: lūla-χō
Ingush: lɔla-χo
Comments: The vowel difference between Chech. and Ing. is explained by the former paradigm: dir. base *lōlu ( > Chech. lūla-), obl. base *lālu- ( > Ing. lɔla-). The root is used also in an adverbial function: Chech. lūla, Ing. lala 'in the neighbourhood'.

Protoform: *ƛ̣:irV
Meaning: 1 person of the same age 2 parent-in-law
Avar: ƛ̣:er-íla-w 1
Akhvakh: -ƛ̣:e 2
Karata: -ƛ̣:er 2
Godoberi: -ƛ̣:ur 2
Comments: In Andian languages the root is used in compounds *ʔima-ƛ̣:ir 'father-in-law' (*'father-guest'), *ʔila-ƛ̣:ir 'mother-in-law' (*'mother-guest'): Akhv. ima-ƛ̣:e, ila-ƛ̣:e (Tseg. ima-ƛ̣:ur, ila-ƛ̣:or), Kar. ima-ƛ̣:er, ila-ƛ̣:er etc. A form -ƛ̣:eb is witnessed in The Ratlub dialect of Akhvakh (ime-ƛ̣:eb, ila-ƛ̣:eb): historically this is a plural form *-ƛ̣:ir-bi, corresponding to the PTs variant *ƛǝr-ba. In Avar, besides ƛ̣:er-íla-w 'person of the same age' (*'companion') the root is used also in the kinship terminology: w-aƛ̣:á-d 'father-in-law', j-aƛ̣:á-d 'mother-in-law' ( < *u_V-/jV-ƛ̣:er-dV with the historical adjectival suffix *-dV).
