Yenisseian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔej
Meaning: tongue
Ket: ēj, pl. Kur. ɛ:ji4, Bak., Sur. ɛ:jǝ4 / ɛjǝ4, South. ɛj4
Yug: ej, pl. ɛ:hj4; ej-git1,6 'to lick'
Kottish: ei, pl. ējaŋ "voice, sound"
Pumpokol: aj (Сл., Срсл.) "tongue"
Comments: ССЕ 187. Werner 1, 272 *ej, pl. <*eʔǝjǝ>. Werner prefers to compare the Kottish form with Yug. ɨʔj 'shout' (2, 433), which is not excluded, but dubious phonetically (the vocalic correspondence is quite irregular).
