Near etymology: "чечевица", стар., цслав. лѩшта φακός, болг. ле́ща (Младенов 274), сербохорв. ле́ħа, словен. léča.
Further etymology: Связано с лат. lens, род. п. lentis, д.-в.-н. linsi, нов.-в.-н. Linsе "чечевица", но это слово нельзя объяснить фонетически ни из лат., ни из герм. Исконно и.-е. происхождение невероятно со стороны реалии, вопреки Шрадеру (у Хена, Kulturpfl. 218); скорее, все эти слова происходят из общего неизвестного источника (см Хоопс, Waldb. 463; Вальде--Гофм. 1, 783; Бернекер 1, 708; Клюге-Гётце 360 и сл.). Едва ли связано с греч. λάθυρος "(бот.) вика", вопреки Шрадеру. Лтш. lę̃ca "чечевица" заимств. из русск. диал. ляца; см. М.--Э. 2, 455.
