Number: 1512
Root: pēu- : pǝu- : pū̆-
English meaning: to hit; sharp
German meaning: `schlagen; scharf, schneidend hauen'
Material: Lat. paviō, -īre `schlagen, stampfen', depuvere `caedere', pavīmentum `geschlagener Boden, Estrich'; von einem Partiz. *putos stammt putō, -āre `schneiden', amputāre `rings beschneiden, abschneiden', (?) puteus `Graben, Grube, Brunnen' (`ausgestochene Grube'); auf einem d- Präs. `niedergeschlagen machen, n. sein' beruht wohl pudet, -ēre `sich schämen', prōpudium `Schandtat, Scheusal', vielleicht repudium `Verstoßung', tripudium `dreischrittiger Tanz', umbr. ahatripursatu `abstripodato'; hierher auch lat. pāveō, -ēre `sich ängstigen' (pavor `Angst', pavidus `furchtsam') als `niedergeschlagen sein'; nd. fūen `mit dem Fuebusch schlagen' (Fastnachtsgebrauch), ahd. urfūr `Verschnittener', arfūrian, ags. ā-fȳran `verschneiden'; lit. pjáuju, pjáuti (*pēu̯i̯ō) `schneiden, ernten, schlachten', ablaut. pjúklas m. `Säge', pjūtìs f. `Erntezeit, August', lett. pĺaũt `mähen, ernten', pĺava f. `Wiese' (= lit. piovà ds.), apr. piuclan n. `Sichel';
daß nachhom. παίω `schlage' = lat. paviō sei, ist immerhin möglich; dann müßte der Aor. ἔπαισα usw. (statt *ἔπαυσα) junge Neubildung zum Präs. sein; zu παίω jedenfalls dor. παιά̄ν, ion. παιήων, att. παιών als `der die Krankheiten durch Zauberschlag heilende (Apollo)', dann mit den Worten ἰη πᾱιήων anfangender Lobgesang.

Proto-Altaic: *p`i̯ṑpo (*p`ṑjpo)
Meaning: to cut through, grind
Russian meaning: разрезать, точить
Comments: In TM cf. also derived forms: Orok pīpu, Ul. pīpu, Ud. siɣi 'drill' (ТМС 2, 39) - possibly reflecting a contamination with *pi̯ŭ̀bi q. v. In Turkic one would rather expect *job-, so perhaps we should rather reconstruct *p`ṑjpo. altet-prnum,altet-meaning,altet-rusmean,altet-turc,altet-mong,altet-tung,altet-kor,altet-jap,altet-reference,
