Udi: boχImoʁI

Comment: A rather obscure Udi word. It is very similar to Av.-And. and Darg. compounds meaning "sheep's tail" and thus may be a metaphorical reflection of this compound (cf. also in Avar, besides the original meaning "sheep's tail", a secondary development into "hump"). If this etymology is true, this will be the only trace of PEC *mēʁV 'tail' in Lezghian.

Proto-Avaro-Andian: *bi(r)qV-miʁa

Proto-Dargwa: *buq-

Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. The root occurs only within the old compound with *mēʁV̆ 'tail' q.v. Medial -r- is lost in all languages, but is probable because of the Avar reflex -χ- (otherwise -h- would be expected).

Avar-Andian etymology :

Protoform: *bi(r)qV-miʁa

Andian language: beχu-muʁul 1

Comments: A compound with *miʁa or *miʁ-ul 'tail' in the second part. The Av. form is distorted (through assimilation) and looks like a reduplication - which is of course secondary.

Proto-Dargwa: *buq-mu[ʁ]

Meaning: sheep's tail

Akusha: buq-muj

Comments: Cf. also Kad. buq-muh, Gapsh. buq-muʔ, Tsud. buq-nuʁI id. (reflexes of *ʁ are not quite regular, probably because of dissimilation with -q-). The word is a compound of *buq- (see under *wǝrqV) and *-mu[ʁ] (see under *mēʁV).
