\data\cauc\aandet
Protoform: *(ro)ʎir ( ~ ra-,ƛ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 reins 2 bridle 3 halter
Avar: kʷeʎ 1,2
Chamalal: raʎir 3 (Gig.)
Comments: The Av. form is a contraction < *kʷe-rʎ < *kʷe-ʎ(V)rV, where kʷe- is the component meaning 'hand'. The Cham. forms are interesting: the Gig. dialect has raʎir which can be analyzed either as a form with suffixed -r, or asa form with a former class marker r-: the latter hypothesis is most probable, because in the U.-Gakv. dialect the word for 'bridle, halter' is baʎi < *ba-ʎir.
