Proto-Nakh: *n(ɦ)iṭṭ ( ~ -ī-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: nettle
Chechen: nitt
Ingush: nitt
Batsbi: niṭṭ
Comments: Obl. base *n(ɦ)iṭṭe- (Chech. nitta-, Ing. nitto). 5th class in Chech., Ing., 6th class in Bacb. External evidence demands some laryngeal in this root; *nɦ- should be reflected as nʕ- in Bacb., but such a combination does not exist before front vowels. We may thus think that the PN form was actually *nɦiṭṭ, but the laryngeal was lost in all modern languages.
