Comments: The Shi rhyme (3,1,4,3) quite explicitly attributes the word to the *-ǝp rhyme class; the reading *ćǝp corresponds quite well to modern jí, but MC cjep is aberrant (cjip would be expected). The character was also used as a loan for 揖 *ćip 'to come together, cluster together', sometimes confused with 輯 ( = 集) *ʒ(h)ǝp 'to collect, gather' q.v. (whenceadditional Sino-Japanese readings: Go zifu, Kan sifu).
