During Late Zhou applied also to a homonymous *g(h)ār(s) 'white (of a horse)'. Still later (since Han) the character used to transcribe other homonymous words: *g(h)ār(s) 'wing' (probably a semantic development of the basic meaning) and *g(h)ār(s) 'writing brush; calligraphy'.
