Classic Old Chinese: pā́j
Western Han Chinese: pā́j
Eastern Han Chinese: pǟ́

Middle Postclassic Chinese: pā́

Middle Chinese: pwâ ́
English meaning : to winnow, sift
Comments: Also read *pājʔ-s, MC pwầ (FQ 補過), Pek. bò. The character presents some problems: it can be alternatively written (during L.Zhou) as 播 (q.v.), which suggests a reconstruction *pārʔ (with a dialectal change *-r > -j in MC, just as in 播), and a comparison with Tib. ãphjar 'to fan, sift, winnow' etc. (see under 播). However, the oldest attestations with 皮 as phonetic seem to favor *-j, and there is an alternative ST parallel: PST *paj > Burm. paj 'put aside, expel', Lush. paih 'to throw away, fling away, strike out', Kach. kǝbai2 'to throw' (see IST 63).
