Modern (Beijing) reading: zhì
Preclassic Old Chinese: teks
Classic Old Chinese: teh
Western Han Chinese: teh
Eastern Han Chinese: ćeh
Early Postclassic Chinese: ćè
Middle Postclassic Chinese: ćè
Late Postclassic Chinese: ćè
Middle Chinese: ćè
English meaning : to place, put down
Russian meaning[s]: вм.
Shuowen gloss: 置也.
Comments: The word is not attested in rhymes, and the final reconstruction is somewhat uncertain. 真 as phonetic is surprising here: it is not a *-r-series, and we would expect something like MC *ćìn if this were the case. A possible hypothesis is that 真 here is a graphic distortion of 直 (OC *drǝk); the MC reading ćè is also not entirely regular in this case (one would rather expect *ćɨ̀ < *tǝks) - but we may guess that 直 was chosen as a "phonosemantic" element here, because of the similarity of OC 寘 *teks 'to put, place' and 置 *trǝks 'to put, set up' (cf. the definition in Shuowen).
