Proto-Kui-Kuwi : *sūc-
Meaning : leech
Gondwan etymology: Gondwan etymology
Kuwi (Fitzgerald) : hūta
Kuwi (Schulze) : hutta, hūci
Sunkarametta Kuwi : huṭṭa
Parja Kuwi : huṭṭa
Notes : The form hūci, witnessed only in Kuwi_S, is a good Proto-Khond lexeme (with parallels in Konda and Pengo), while the other forms, although more frequent, are unparalleled. This makes me suggest that these are produced by contamination of the old form hūci with the verb *uṇ-/*uṭ-p- 'to drink, suck'. Otherwise it would be possible to think of an old suffixal development, like *hūc-t- > *huṭ-; however, such a suffix is unknown to me.
