\data\drav\kuiet
Proto-Kui-Kuwi : *par-
Meaning : to spread; cushion
Gondwan etymology: Gondwan etymology
Kui : prahpa (praht-) "to spread out (tr.), scatter over a level surface"
Kuwi (Fitzgerald) : pressali "to spread out paddy to dry"
Kuwi (Schulze) : parpu "cushion, mattress"
Additional forms : Also Kui brāḍa (brāḍi-) to be sounded abroad, be spread (news); brāṭpa (brāṭt-) to sound abroad, proclaim, spread (news); n. proclamation
Notes : The Kui form may go back to a) *prāpa < *pār-pa; b) *praspa < *pars-pa; c) *praypa < *par-y-pa. If Kuwi pressali is related to the Kuwi form, it is the third variant that is most acceptable, since only an inlaut *-y- can explain the differences in vocalism. On the other side, Kuwi -ss- would beautifully correspond to Kui -h- were it developed from PDR *-s-. Anyway, in both cases -s- and -y- would be suffixes, since the root is evidently *par-. If Kui -ḍ- is a suffix, then brāḍa quite regularly < *bar-ḍa < *par-ḍa (voicening before two voiced consonants).
