Proto-Pengo-Manda : *kiv-
Meaning : ear
Gondwan etymology: Gondwan etymology
Pengo : kitul
Manda : giy (pl. -ke)
Notes : Pengo kitul is a complex form, where ki- is (at least etymologically) the root. Although -Vl is a Pengo suffix, nowhere else do we find the word for ear with a -t-, so we have to suppose that kitul is a compound form, with its second part unclear. In Manda the form is simple; however, we have to explain the secondary voicening. Reconstruction of *kiy is, therefore, impossible. If we suppose a development of PPM *-v > Manda -y (with no counterexamples), the voicening should be due to PPM *kiv > *giv > *giy; however, it is more probable that -y is a suffix (like in trey 'hair' < ter-y-), so giy < *kiv-y. Pengo kitul in this case goes back to *kiv-tul.
