Proto-Eskimo: *quqru-Г ~ *quqlu-Г- [*quqRa-tku-]
Meaning: giant polar bear (legendary)
Russian meaning: огромный белый медведь (фольк.)
Comments: The Proto-Yupik form is a loanword from early Chukchee qʔocatku (< PCh *qoqLa-cku- dur.) 'to yowl, to howl' (also in folklore - 'howler', 'the name of the legendary polar bear calling people in a human voice and eating them during the snowstorm'). The Proto-Inupik form is a participle from the verb of same meaning (with an alternation *-ql- ~ *-qr-), also borrowed from PCh. Cf. *ququra-ʁ-. Comparative Eskimo Dictionary: 318
