Proto-Eskimo: *tuŋvaʁ- (~ *-ŋm-)
Meaning: to hide, to put away, to bury
Russian meaning: прятать, убирать, хоронить
Proto-Yupik: *tuŋvaГ-tǝ- (~ *-ŋm-)
Proto-Inupik: *tuɣvaʁ-
Comments: The root displays a certain fluctuation in the reflexes of the inlaut cluster. This stem is borrowed from PKCh *tъmŋъ- 'to vanish, to be lost'; the meaning 'to hide, to conceal' represents a different diathesis (136). The source of borrowing seems to have been PKam *txʷŏŋ-, which has actually got that kind of transitive semantics. The meaning 'to bury' is clearly cultural, and proves the borrowed character of the word.
