Proto-Eskimo: *Naqra-
Meaning: valley, mountain pass
Russian meaning: долина, ущелье
Proto-Yupik: *Naq(r)a
Proto-Inupik: *naqra-
Comments: This stem may be derived from *ńaq-rǝ- 'to tighten, to squeeze, to press' because the semantic development 'sth. tight, squeezed' > 'mountain pass' is common for many languages. It cannot be related to Inupik naqiɣ- 'low' because of semantic and phonetic reasons.
